Radiation From Baby Monitors

We were never aware until recently that a baby monitor emits a high level of radiation. We had purchased one just before we had our child because we thought we definitely needed one. The one we bought was approx. $70.00 and just does sound not video. The brand is Safety 1st and we bought at Babies R Us.

The new ones have DECT which is the same technology used in newer cordless phones that most people use in their homes.

As it shows on the box it operates at a higher frequency then old technology to give interference free performance.

First off I plugged in the rechargeable unit that the parent would carry, probably on the belt as it has a belt clip. Using a microwave radiation detector we get almost 2000 microwatts per meter squared. This is at a distance of about 6 feet. That is an alarming rate for those not familiar with this reading. Similar exposure to standing outside a few hundred yards away from a cell phone tower.

I used another detection device which reads in micro watts per centimeter square. The other reading was in microwatts per meter squared.  This will be needed to read such a high reading we are getting off the baby monitor. This reads at just over 10 micro watts per centimeter squared which is really high. That works out to 100,000 microwatts per square meter. The other meter only went up to 2000. That's a lot of microwave radiation to have clipped on your belt!

The other part of the monitor of course get put with the baby. I made a video (below) of this test. It also gave some high readings as well and let you hear what this radiation sounds like. When we first started talking to people in the know about this stuff, they would say things like "Don't use this device around the baby as you are microwaving your baby!" That's was a hard statement to get our head around at first. We thought it cant really be that bad and its not really the kind of frequency/radiation we would find in a kitchen microwave.
But with a little Googling it's not hard to find out that it is! Just less power. Like a really low setting on the microwave. This put it into perspective for us.

We are inundated with radiation in our environment that is the equivalent of an extra slow cook on the microwave oven. We may not heat up but there is research on rats that this stuff toxic to our cells and genes.

If someone said it's ok to stick your head in microwave because its on a super low setting and said don't worry you won't get warm. Would you do it??

With all devices that emit radiation there are concerns about having it close to a developing child. Our children always seem more vulnerable to toxins in our environment and this is no different.

We don't live in a mansion so luckily we do just fine without a baby monitor. After all don't moms have super hearing anyway?

So now we have a baby monitor in the basement catching dust. Once you feel that it's not safe to use with your own child, what do you do with it? Do we give it away or throw it out? After reading this and you still feel that it's ok to use then you can have ours. It's sad though because we have jobs to do as parents, to be the protector and provider. Ultimately lots of children may be affected by this as many parents have not looked into the possible risks or choose not to believe these risks.

Who knows what the long term affects will be. This human experiment is just starting. Some of these carcinogens in our environment take years to break us down. We all know smoking is bad but smoking may not cause cancer until 20 or 30 years out. Could this low level radiation have a similar wearing down of the body? Many expert scientists think the answer is YES.

Check out Dr. Magda Havas from Trent University. She has lots of good videos on microwave radiation on her YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/magdahavas/featured
This video below covers a few different devices and she goes over the same baby monitor we have at about the 5 min mark.

I have looked online and only found one baby monitor and its also the one Magda Havas recommends. Its called Babyfon. The link to the website is: http://www.babyfon.com/en/products/bm_440_eco_plus.php

It has to be bought on Amazon in the UK. It doesn't come up in North America when searched for.
Heres the link: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Babyfon-Vivanco-BM-440-Plus/dp/B000KKKV0Y

We might look into ordering one but we have been doing really well without one so far. So we will see how it goes.

I hope a few people get to see this blog and give some thought to putting these microwave baby monitors near there precious loved ones.
